January Hill Country Backpacking trip

Posted on Mar 23 2021 - 4:35pm

The troop backpacked Hill Country State Natural Area from 22-24 Jan 21.  The first night we stayed in the Equestrian Area, with generators humming and found out that little camper kids can ride bicycles in the moon light after midnight!!  The next day we hiked to the wilderness area and set up camp in our individual tents and then TJ led us on a 3 mile hike on the "ice cream" backcountry trail.  We found the pond eventually and purified water for dinner.  Got to see EMS respond to a broken leg in another group (so that is why we carry our first aid kit!!)  That night we chowed down on a rice and chicken stew prepared by Justin and Eric on our backpacking stoves.  It was an early dark evening as we prepared to hike out the next morning.  Although we never actually got rained on, it was a wet weekend with us learning to live inside a cloud.   Although we got a little wet, it wasn't cold like a typical January and we did enjoy hiking in the cool weather without the hot Texas sun!  Total backpack mileage was around 7 miles.  A great campout focused on learning Philmont backpack skills using the troop's Philmont gear.

Survival Campout at Camp Alzafar

Posted on Mar 23 2021 - 4:35pm

Troop 512 Scouts headed to Alzafar Shrine Camp the weekend of September 11-13 to practice their wilderness survival skills. The Scouts slept in shelters they prepared from poles, twine, and tarps.  They cooked their meals on coals from fires they created with flint and steel and practiced fishing with line, hooks, and bait they found on the land.  After, they took some time out from their hard work and cooled off in the cool river waters. We enjoyed banana smores in tin foil cooking as dessert.

On Oct 9-11, the Troop and Crew went canoeing on the Guadalupe river at Kerrville.  We canoed 4 miles and learned canoeing skills for the canoeing merit badge.

We adjusted our cooking plan to Dutch ovens and enjoyed monkey bread on Saturday. More photos in the photo album.
